Attendees: Olena Boner
Carolyn Hollingsworth
Ron Scaggs
Roger Bopp
Dave Allen
Phyllis Allen
Isabel Pumilia
The meeting was opened at 4:30 p.m. by Olena Boner, President.
The President introduced the present Board and Kevin Kernan. Dave Allen was recognized as a former Board member.
The Secretary introduced the candidates for the offices of President and Treasurer. She asked for nominations from the floor. There being none, a voice election for the offices of President and Treasurer was conducted. Olena Boner was unanimously elected President and Carolyn Hollingsworth was unanimously elected Treasurer of the Day Trippers Club.
The Treasurer reported the balance to date of $3111.11 She stated that annual dues would be waived for existing members. A total of 342 residents attended 9 activities in 2011.
The President gave a brief explanation of the objectives of the Day Trippers Club. The HR Day Trippers Club was formed because previously there had been an activities director, but her leaving left a void in organized activities. This is the 5th year of the existence of the Day Trippers Club. The objective is to plan quality, cost effective and convenient day trips to places within the Metroplex area. There is a 100 mi. radius and 2 hour limit to the length of the trips planned. The Board looks for ways to get a better deal than if a resident travelled on his own. The Board is always looking for new ideas and suggestions.
With the help of a PowerPoint presentation, the President reviewed the 2011 trips highlighting: the Dallas tour, Rangers opening day game, Scarborough Fare, second Rangers Game, Theatre Three, Cowboy Stadium, Granbury Opera House, State Fair and Grapevine Opry.
Sandy Gelfand asked if the Board was planning a tour of Ft. Worth. Olena said a Dallas tour was planned for 2012 and a Ft. Worth tour in 2013.
With the help of a PowerPoint presentation, the Treasurer highlighted the proposed 2012 trips. The first event—Allen Americans hockey game and pre-game party—is already sold out. The Treasurer announced the Wranglers game, Dallas tour, Rangers game, Swiss Avenue tour, Lyric Theatre, Lone Star Park, Ft. Worth Mint/American Airlines Training Center, Athens Fresh Water Fishery, State Fair, Arboretum and Canton. The December event is yet to be planned.
Peggy Wade asked if residents would be on the bus most of the time for the Dallas Tour. Olena responded that there would be a few opportunities to get off the bus, but the tour is mostly on the bus. Lunch is planned at Baker’s Rib.
Olena pointed out that there was a list for trip suggestions displayed with the signup sheets.
Janet Morgan asked if there were any restrictions on the number of activities planned in a month. Olena responded that there was no restriction.
The President discussed opening day of the Rangers game in 2011 and said that it was a nightmare. Peg Wade said the seats were terrible. Olena said that some people were able to move to better seats. Olena reported that her request for tickets to the opening game on April 6, 2012 was not going well. The seats would not be good. Olena reported that the Club has 33 tickets for the Rangers v. Yankees game which would have better seats. Reservations for the Rangers v. Yankees game on April 25 must be accompanied by a check. Tickets would be $51 each ($31 for the actual ticket and $20 for the bus).
Kevin Kernan reported on the Wranglers’ kick off meeting. He reported that a Heritage Ranch Fan Club was being formed. He showed a floor plan of the Allen Event Center and reported that a discount was being extended to HR residents and their families. The Wranglers will be playing their home games at the Allen Event Center. Terrell Owens will be playing only home games. All Wranglers home games will be on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The tickets for the February 25 game are $19 each—with the Day Trippers Club paying the tax and any additional fees. Transportation is not included. Kevin explained that indoor football is a more offensive, scaled-down style of play. Kevin announced that a buffet at the clubhouse is planned for the evening of the game from 5-6:00 p.m. The cost is $16.00 per person. Residents are asked to let Carolyn know if they would like to have the buffet when they submit their checks. Olena reminded everyone that a Release Form is needed for all residents and their families.
Ron Scaggs was introduced as the coordinator of transportation. He reported that there were some difficulties with Road Runners’ buses in 2011. The average cost for a bus per person per trip is $18-$20. Cost is reduced when the number of attendees increases; e.g., a combined trip to the Arboretum with the Garden Club may require two buses bringing the cost to about $13 per person. Each trip has a coordinator/sponsor. Special needs equipment can be made available on the bus if the coordinator is told in advance of the trip. A Lone Star bus was used for the December trip to Grapevine and was very enjoyable. Ron reported that Road Runner has some new buses.
Dave was introduced as the webmaster and reported that all upcoming trips are detailed on the website. There is also a section on the website listing the officers of the Day Trippers Club and a Release Form. Olena mentioned that there were extra copies of the Release Form in the Day Trippers slot in the Arts & Crafts Room. Dave gave the web address and suggested that the attendees check the website from time to time.
The Secretary gave the dates of the general meetings for 2012 and invited the members to attend the open Board meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. in the Elm Arts & Crafts Room.
The President opened the meeting to discussion. Janet Morgan asked if there were any opportunities to do overnight trips. Ron Scaggs reported that it would be more complex; i.e., lodging, transportation expense, etc., to do an overnight trip. Olena suggested Patti Tours for longer trips. Overnight trips would require a guarantee of number and also would be a liability to the Club.
Phyllis reported that the Club started the year with $1600 and has boosted the treasury by being more conservative and cautious in planning trips. Theatre tickets were not purchased in advance.
Sandy Gelfand asked where the increase in treasury funds came from. Carolyn reported that there were several new members who paid membership dues. Invitations to join Day Trippers are extended to all new residents published in the Ranch Reporter. A profit is made if more attendees sign up for a trip than was estimated. Olena reported that the Club tries to keep all trips to a minimum cost of $50 per person.
Charlie Gelfand asked if a trip could be planned to some of the museums in Ft. Worth. Phyllis said that the Club was considering that. Ron Scaggs said that exhibits at museums need to have a big draw to attract residents.
Jean Howard suggested a trip to the Greek Festival in September. Phyllis said that the previous trip to the Greek Festival was successful, and the Board would consider another trip.
The President reported that Roger Bopp was coordinating a trip to the Athens Fishery. Roger said he was talking to Bob Canton about a dual trip with the Heritage Ranch Fishing Club.
Jean Howard said she liked going to Lone Star Park on the bus with a group. Phyllis reported that a trip is being planned to Lone Star.
Olena said that the Board would be looking at performances at the Eisemann.
The President conducted a drawing for two set of tickets to the April 6 Rangers’ opening day game. Jean Howard and Carol Weedon were the winners.
The next general meeting of the Heritage Ranch Day Trippers Club will be on April 19, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. in the Elm Arts and Crafts room.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Isabel Pumilia
